Mobile Sim delivers OB Emergencies simulation to J. Paul Jones Hospital

A mother’s blood pressure is rising. The delivery is coming faster than anyone expected. The team has seconds to communicate, delegate and act.
On Feb. 5, UAB Clinical Simulation’s Mobile Simulation team brought that high-stakes scenario to J. Paul Jones Hospital in Camden, Alabama, one of the rural communities the mobile program was built to reach.
Using a standardized patient, seven interprofessional learners—including a physician, two registered nurses, a paramedic, an emergency vehicle operator, a medical assistant and a certified nurse assistant—worked through a scenario involving maternal hypertension progressing to a precipitous delivery. The goal wasn’t just clinical skill. It was team communication, role clarity and coordinated response when a situation evolves quickly and there’s no time to pause.
Guiding the clinical realism throughout the session was Dr. Sharon Phelan, UAB Medicine adjunct professor and obstetric content expert, whose expertise grounded the scenario in authentic, high-fidelity detail.
The enthusiasm in the room was unmistakable.
“I learned a lot and stayed fully engaged the whole time,” said Jalen Powell, emergency vehicle operator. “It was a 10/10 experience that I really enjoyed!”
“Like the communities we serve, the Mobile Sim team believes every patient, wherever they are, deserves a care team that has practiced together,” mobile simulation coordinator Mercedees Willis said. “Sessions like this one are exactly how that happens.”
UAB Medicine’s Clinical Simulation program offers opportunities for individuals and teams across UAB Medicine and beyond to practice before they deliver care. We encourage all who provide and support patient care to “Sim First.” Together, we can put our patients’ safety first.
