Clinical Simulation equips facilitators, learners for success

UAB Clinical Simulation is known for equipping learners with confidence, teamwork and hands-on experience. Sometimes, however, that mission becomes a bit more literal.
Equipment loans are one of Clinical Simulation’s most widely used services, wherein UAB Medicine partners select and borrow training equipment to facilitate simulation—at no cost.
“We loan and provide various task trainers and equipment items to partners all over the hospital for training purposes,” explained Ben Whitaker, operations manager with UAB Clinical Simulation.
With an ever-expanding inventory of trainers available, Clinical Simulation works with those partners to tailor an experience that effectively meets their unique needs and objectives, Whitaker said.
Helendria Goldman, R.N., is one of them. As a nursing professional development specialist, Goldman regularly checks out equipment for ultrasound-guided peripheral IV simulations.
“It’s very helpful, and it gives staff the opportunity to practice and become more comfortable with procedures before working with an actual patient,” she said.
Goldman takes advantage of the equipment program about once a month. Her learners, she said, appreciate the psychologically safe environment fostered by healthcare simulation.
“(My learners) love it because it gives them a chance to make mistakes without harming anyone or facing real consequences,” she said. “It helps them get more in the zone and become familiar with what they need to do when they’re caring for a real patient.”
Sharon McGinester, nursing professional development specialist with the Center for Nursing Excellence, said she uses the program “every chance I get,” as it allows her staff to train on the very equipment they would use in a clinical setting.
“The equipment operates like in real life,” McGinester said. “(Learners) are able to touch and manipulate and feel comfortable with the equipment, supplies and even anatomy while working in a controlled setting.”

UAB Medicine’s Clinical Simulation program offers opportunities for individuals and teams across UAB Medicine and beyond to practice before they deliver care. We encourage all who provide and support patient care to “SimFirst.” Together, we can put our patients’ safety first.
