HeartCode Complete: Confidence-Building Through Practice & Partnership

Every second counts in a cardiac emergency—which is why practice and preparation matter.
HeartCode® Complete, a blended learning program offered through UAB Medicine, helps providers and staff build life-saving confidence through repeated, hands-on practice.
Since its implementation in 2016, the program has provided thousands of learners with foundational training in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
The program is a collaboration between the Center for Nursing Excellence (CNE), HSF Training and UAB Clinical Simulation. Together, the partners ensure that the training is accessible, flexible and grounded in the highest standards of patient care.
“The HeartCode® model empowers people to practice when and where it works for them,” said Dr. Marjorie Lee White, vice president of UAB Clinical Simulation. “Then, when it’s time to demonstrate those skills in person, they’re not just checking a box—they’re applying what they’ve learned in a meaningful, memorable way.”
HeartCode® Complete is designed in two parts. First, learners complete a self-paced, computer-based module remotely, giving them the freedom to review and absorb clinical guidelines at their own pace. Then, they move on to Part 2: an in-person skills assessment using voice-assisted manikins. These responsive manikins provide immediate feedback as learners practice high-stakes interventions like CPR, rhythm interpretation and defibrillation. For Part 2 locations, please view this map.
The CNE oversees implementation across UAB Medicine, assigning online modules and coordinating participation by unit as well as direct coaching of participants. HSF Training supports providers and ambulatory staff, while UAB Clinical Simulation ensures the smooth operation of the program’s physical components.
Part 2 skills assessments can be completed in HeartCode® labs across UAB Hospital and UAB Highlands. A list of locations can be found here.
To get started, hospital employees should email centerfornursingexcellence@uabmc.edu. Providers and ambulatory team members should reach out to hsftraining@uabmc.edu.
UAB Medicine’s Clinical Simulation program offers opportunities for individuals and teams across UAB Medicine and beyond to practice before they deliver care. We encourage all who provide and support patient care to “Sim First.” Together, we can put our patients’ safety first.
