Sim Stars: Tamicka Jones, MSN, RN, TCRN

Tamicka Jones, a nursing professional development specialist serving in UAB Hospital’s Emergency Department, is this month’s Sim Star.

Sim Stars is a regular feature in UAB Clinical Simulation’s think Sim First newsletter, created to highlight the simulation facilitators who bring learning to life. Each month, we spotlight a partner whose work exemplifies excellence in simulation, collaboration and experiential learning for UAB Medicine.

As a nursing professional development specialist with UAB Hospital’s Emergency Department, Tamicka Jones brings a steady presence and a deep commitment to growth into every simulation she facilitates.

Her journey with health-care simulation began at the bedside, where she found herself searching for new ways to strengthen her clinical practice.

“During my clinical practice, I was curious to find a way to improve the care I provided to my patients,” Jones said. “I was able to attend clinical simulations… which eventually led me to take the necessary courses that translated into becoming a facilitator.”

That early curiosity has grown into a passion for interprofessional learning. Jones especially enjoys simulations in the Emergency Department that bring nurses, physicians and other teammates into the same room to work through evolving scenarios.

“The different scenarios foster collaboration, communication and mutual respect among the team,” she said. “It is incredibly rewarding to see the team work together to solve problems.”

Among the many moments she has witnessed in simulation, one stands out clearly.

“One of the most memorable moments was when a learner voiced a previously unaddressed concern during the simulation,” Jones said. “Watching them communicate effectively, receive feedback and think critically about the next steps was extremely rewarding.”

For Jones, experiences like these reveal why simulation is so distinct from traditional instruction.

“Simulation bridges cognitive and emotional learning by allowing learners to apply knowledge in real-time, make mistakes and reflect on their actions,” she said. “The active approach enhances retention, builds confidence and provides immediate feedback. This is often missing in traditional classroom settings. It prepares learners for the complexities associated with real-world practice.”

As for those stepping into facilitation for the first time, Jones offers guidance grounded in empathy and experience.

“I remind myself that I am a guide, not a lecturer,” she said. “Creating a safe and supportive environment is essential. I want learners to feel safe making mistakes and asking questions. This encourages trust and curiosity. Stepping back during simulations and letting learners take the lead helps them develop critical thinking and confidence.”

Through her work, Jones continues to strengthen both the confidence and connectedness of teams across UAB Medicine. Her focus on communication, collaboration and learner-centered facilitation makes her a standout partner in advancing a culture of learning throughout the Emergency Department and beyond.

UAB Medicine’s Clinical Simulation program offers opportunities for individuals and teams across UAB Medicine and beyond to practice before they deliver care. We encourage all who provide and support patient care to “Sim First.” Together, we can put our patients’ safety first.
