Mobile team hosts sepsis tabletop sim at Mizell Memorial Hospital

UAB Clinical Simulation’s Mobile Simulation team traveled to Opp, Alabama, on Nov. 13 to partner with Mizell Memorial Hospital for a sepsis tabletop simulation focused on strengthening early recognition and coordinated response to sepsis.
During the interactive session, participants worked through realistic case scenarios that challenged them to identify early warning signs, initiate timely interventions and determine appropriate escalation pathways.
The exercise also emphasized teamwork and communication, allowing learners to discuss roles, responsibilities and decision-making in a supportive environment.
A total of 24 professionals took part in the training, including 16 RNs, two LPNs, an LPN student, the hospital’s CEO and CNO, two educators and two administrative staff.
Participants demonstrated strengths in timely recognition of sepsis indicators, clear role understanding and effective delegation, while expressing a desire for continued growth. Learners also reflected on the complexity of sepsis care.
“Sepsis is a like a puzzle,” learner Amber Sullivan, R.N., said. “It only takes one missing piece for the patient’s condition to fall apart.”
UAB Medicine’s Clinical Simulation program offers opportunities for individuals and teams across UAB Medicine and beyond to practice before they deliver care. We encourage all who provide and support patient care to “Sim First.” Together, we can put our patients’ safety first.
