Mobile Simulation delivers OB sims at UAB St. Vincent’s St. Clair

UAB Mobile Simulation delivers.
On March 18 and again on April 17, UAB Mobile Simulation teamed up with UAB St. Vincent’s St. Clair in Pell City and Dr. Sharon Phelan (adjunct professor, OB-GYN, UAB Medicine) to bring critical, hands-on obstetric training to rural Alabama.
The simulation focused on managing a precipitous delivery and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), equipping health-care professionals with the skills needed to act swiftly and effectively during life-threatening emergencies.
With the use of a high-fidelity birthing manikin and a standardized patient (an individual trained to portray a patient), participants experienced a realistic and controlled environment where they practiced emergency interventions for uterine atony and active bleeding. Key learning objectives included early escalation of care, utilization of OB emergency kits, team role establishment and decisive response to hemorrhage.
House supervisor Candace Harwood shared her appreciation for the hands-on learning, saying, “The simulation experience was far more educational than a normal classroom learning experience. It allowed hands-on training and required immediate, critical thinking by all staff. My group loved the sim and learned a lot.”
Another participant captured the impact best: “OB sim is always appreciated in a rural setting like ours that doesn’t have OB. This approach allows our staff to practice a terrifying process and perfect it without harm to anyone. Thank you!”
These transformative experiences empowered health-care professionals with the confidence to handle obstetric emergencies with precision and teamwork.
