Virtual Reality

Virtual simulations use a variety of immersive, highly visual, 3D characteristics to replicate real-life situations and/or health care procedures; virtual reality simulation is distinguished from computer-based simulation in that it generally incorporates physical or other interfaces such as a computer keyboard, a mouse, speech and voice recognition, motion sensors, or haptic devices.

As technology is becoming more advanced, the use of virtual reality in healthcare simulation increases, and as various research has shown, improves student learning outcomes. UAB Clinical Simulation has Oculus Quest 2 devices available for in-person independent study in the virtual reality lab or on loan for use outside the lab.

I learned a lot in the VR world and was given enough space to practice different scenarios. I felt like it showed me my deficiencies that I wasn’t aware of until I was actually in that scenario. I also felt like I was emotionally involved in the scenarios because of the setup and feeling that I was really in it. I think it’s a great educational tool and hope that we get to use it more.
